The Forums will officially close in the next couple of months. (Well I’ve already paid for the web hosting package until then, so I may as well use it!)
It has been a disappointing decision to make, given the amount of time, effort and money invested in it, but the lack of interest it has received has been rather disappointing in itself.
The idea of this site was to make it easier for friends and family to keep in contact with each other during their busy lives and I hoped that it would grow without an expensive advertising campaign, by me advising friends, family, and extended family, who in turn would advise their friends, their families etc.
Unfortunately, it did not get much further than the first stage. I suppose the idea was a little too late, with those who wanted to share their thoughts, photos and have a general chat, already part of the Facebook / Bebo / myspace / AN Other communities.
Trying to make this site a success has brought a lot of additional pressure, putting unnecessary strains on relationships, for which I am sorry.
Until the webhosting deal expires, I may continue to use the site as a blog, posting my thoughts from time to time.
There are a couple of things that I have learnt from the past year plus trying to get this going:
1) It’s a lot harder trying to get an internet business up and running than you would expect. Especially using the ‘word of mouth’ method. Apparently, it should only take a handful of people to give it a go and it would snowball, yeah right. It's a lot harder getting a handful of people interested, if you're as popular as I've become ;-)
2)As VW said in what must be, in my opinion, the best quote to come out of this site: “Social Networking is something that should be done in person”
In signing off, for now, I would just like to say to those who do lead busy lives (and we all do these days) not to forget who their real life friends and family are - Social Networking should be done in person ;-) Life is too short – make time for those that you care about.
Thanks for the feedback VW. The Gallery section is only on trial, as we said, and it may or may not become a popular feature.
There are, indeed, other sites for photo sharing and videos. I'm not sure if there are too many where you can upload both, or even keep private albums for friends only, though.
To be honest, there are a lot of my friends and family who do use Facebook, and other sites on a regular basis, but do not spend a great deal of time on here. (that, in itself, made me think that the site needs changing a little!) - Again any feedback as to what features you would like to help make this become a popular place, would be appreciated.
I thought that maybe the attraction of Facebook etc was the fact that photos play a big part in the set up. If we can attract more users to the gallery, hopefully bringing their friends with them, then there is a chance that more will join the forum, making it a better experience for those who already use this feature.
Having said that, the gallery was set up as a different entity to the forums. ie. you have to log into each application, rather than logging into the forum and uploading albums to your forum account. This was done so that those who don't like the idea of using the galleries do not feel pressured into using it, and vice versa.
Basically, you can choose either, neither or both!
You may or may not have noticed the top Navigation bar has slightly changed, as we have added a new feature - Galleries.
Basically, you can upload your Pictures, audio and Video files in either the public galleries, available for all internet users to see.
Alternatively, you have the option to make your own albums in the user galleries. These files are accessible by all gallery members, so a little more private, if you like.
There is also the option to make your albums password protected. These albums will not show up to everybody, even registered gallery users. You can send these albums by a link to whoever you want to share the files with and advise them of the password.
You, or your friends only need to enter the password once, for your convenience, as details are then stored on a cookie, allowing access to the files each time you (or your friend) log on.
Registered Gallery members can add comments to the photo's or video's, as well as being able to send any photographs as an ecard - Ideal for your holiday snaps when you are away.
We're not sure how popular this new feature will be, but we shall run with it for a while, and look forward to receiving any feedback.
Some of you may be unaware that there is a facility to send private messages to other forum users, which are only viewable by you and the receiving party.
Just before the 'Enter your comments' field is a field marked 'Whisper your comments to (optional)'
Just type in the user account name of the person who you want to send the message to and type your message.
Only you and the receiver will be able to view these messages, so it's a good way to keep in touch with your friends.
Obvioulsy, in order to send your friends private messages, they will need to be a member of the forums. So, ask your friends to sign up and they too can message you and join in the discussions ;-)
Please accept my apologies for posting this sponsorship request. It is on behalf of my sister, who would appear to be a little bit shy ;-)
She and her daughter, Hannah are taking part in the Race for Life and is desperatley looking for sponsers.
I know you do not not her personally (or indeed online) but you do know the charity and it would be greatly appreciated if you could find a little spare change in your pocket to help raise money for this good cause.
